Long Island for Colombia- Our Success
Helping the Neediest
From its beginnings Long Island for Colombia has relied
on the assistance of non-government organizations, non-profit groups,
small business owners, and the generous help of hundreds of people from
diverse cultures here and in Colombia, to set and meet important goals
that help those most in need.
As a result here is a partial listing of their accomplishments:
- More than 100,000 pounds of food, medicine, clothing
and basic necessities were collected in the first 90 days.
- Over US $50,000 were raised through fund-raisers,
raffles, auctions, pro-Colombia music concerts and dances, and with
the generous donations of thousands.
- Members of the organization traveled to Colombia,
at their own expense, within months of the earthquake to assess the
effects of this terrible tragedy.
- A sister organization, Long Island for Colombia-Armenia,
under the direction of the Dean of the School of Engineering of the
University of Quindio, Dr. Diego Guerrero was established to coordinate
distribution of relief items sent to Colombia.
- Under the supervision of FOREC (Fund for the Reconstruction
and Social Development of the Coffee Growing Region) and in partnership
with the non-government Colombian agency El Minuto de Dios, a project
for the construction of new homes was started, to begin the long term
job of reconstructing the lives, dreams and hopes of the displaced.
The fruits of their efforts, drive and sacrifices can
be seen today:
- Members of the organization traveled to Colombia in
2001, once again at their own expense, to personally hand-over the first
27 homes in the new La Grecia Siglo XXI neighborhood.
- More than US $85,000 have been raised, of which US
$50,000 were assigned directly for the construction of houses in La
Grecia Siglo XXI.
- In partnership with El Minuto de Dios, Long Island
for Colombia has donated more than US $25,000 for direct aid to those
displaced by the violence in the Department of Putumayo, and for the
construction of new homes in Monteria, in the Department of Cordoba.
- In 2002, 8 new homes were built in Monteria.
Our mission continues, and with your support we can make
come true our dream of helping those that most need help.
Please give generously.
